Eastern Amazon

The tropical forests of the eastern Amazon Basin in Brazil are undergoing rapid conversion to large-scale ranching and agriculture, driven primarily by demand for commodities such as timber, beef and soy. Given high development pressure and links to global commerce, we work to address the sustainability of existing agricultural production, to preserve remaining tracts of intact forest such as the Xingu region, and to move the Brazilian economic engine towards practices and policies that embrace reductions in deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions.
